How to Get Your Products Recommended by ChatGPT

You’ve heard ChatGPT is the next storefront. Your vendor says buy their feed tool. Your agency says wait and see.

We’d say you’re being sold the wrong thing. To get products recommended by ChatGPT, you don’t need a checkout inside the chat. You need product data it can verify, and a store that closes the sale it sends you.

The Real Value of AI Readiness

Optimizing for AI search isn’t about chasing algorithmic tricks or paying for guaranteed placements. It requires treating your product data as a foundational brand asset. When you maintain clean feeds, transparent pricing, and seamless on-site conversion paths, you align directly with how modern models evaluate merchants. Ultimately, getting recommended by ChatGPT bridges the gap between digital discovery and real revenue, ensuring your store captures high-intent traffic ready to buy.

You Were Told ChatGPT Would Close the Sale, and Then the Plan Changed

In November 2025, OpenAI’s launch post for shopping research said shoppers would eventually buy directly through ChatGPT from merchants in Instant Checkout.

That’s not where it landed. OpenAI’s merchant page now says it’s moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout experience. Shoppers discover and evaluate products in ChatGPT, and purchases are completed on merchant-owned websites or apps.

So the buy button isn’t your plan anymore. The shortlist still is. OpenAI says hundreds of millions of people use ChatGPT to find, understand and compare products.

Agentic commerce, as Shopify defines it, means AI agents helping shoppers discover, compare and buy inside a conversation. Shopify also reports that AI-driven traffic to its stores grew 8 times year over year in Q1 2026, and orders from AI-powered searches rose nearly 13 times.

That’s Shopify describing its own stores, and it doesn’t say how big the starting number was. Treat it as direction, not a forecast.

Now picture your monthly report. Search rankings, ad spend, ROAS. Nothing in it says whether ChatGPT names you when a buyer asks what to buy.

That’s the blind spot. You can run a clean ad account and a fast store, and still be missing from the one answer your buyer reads before they ever visit.

Here’s the test. Open ChatGPT, type the question your best customer asks before buying, and look at who gets named.

The checkout left the chat. The shortlist stayed.

ChatGPT Reads One Product Row Before It Ever Sees Your Brand Story

Here’s the part most guides skip.

OpenAI’s product feed spec asks for one row per purchasable item or variant, with nine required fields. For merchants who share a feed or sit in a connected catalog, that row is how a product meets ChatGPT.

In plain terms, a ChatGPT product feed is a file, CSV or JSON, with one row per item. OpenAI’s docs say it should be refreshed regularly and include identifiers, descriptions, pricing, inventory, media and fulfillment details.

Everyone else gets read the hard way. OpenAI says you don’t need a feed if ChatGPT already crawls your site, but a feed gives you more control over accuracy.

And it isn’t an ad slot. OpenAI says shopping research results are organic and drawn from publicly available retail sites, and that it steers away from low-quality or spammy ones.

OpenAI also names its own weak spot. The model can get price and availability wrong, so it tells shoppers to confirm on the merchant’s site.

Shopify makes the same point from its side. It says AI platforms without structured data fall back on scraping, which can surface outdated pricing and inventory. Shopify has a stake in that argument, but it matches what OpenAI admits about its own model.

That makes stale data more than a cosmetic flaw. It’s how a buyer clicks through, sees a different price and leaves.

Think of the feed as your product’s cover letter. Your site is the interview. ChatGPT reads the first one, and your checkout has to win the second.

ChatGPT opens the door. Your own checkout has to close the deal.

Nobody Can Promise You a Ranking Here, and That Includes Us

Before you spend a dollar, know the limits.

  • It’s U.S.-only for now. OpenAI says shopping is currently live for ChatGPT users in the U.S. On Shopify, your store can be based abroad, but it has to sell to customers in the United States.
  • The ranking formula isn’t published. OpenAI says richer data helps products surface with more accurate information. We couldn’t find a list of ranking factors, and Shopify only says they vary by AI platform and can include data quality, relevance, availability, pricing and engagement.
  • Feed access isn’t open to everyone yet. If you’re not on Shopify or Etsy, you apply and join a waitlist. OpenAI’s page says a self-serve portal is planned for later this year, so check whether it’s live before you apply.
  • We found no verified conversion data. Not from OpenAI, and not from any primary study on ChatGPT shopping referrals. So we won’t quote one.

If a vendor shows you a conversion number, ask for the primary source.

Key Takeaway

Here’s How We’d Get Products Recommended by ChatGPT in Six Moves

Run these in order. Each one closes a gap between what ChatGPT can verify and what your store claims.

1. Find Out Which Door You’re Already Standing In

Your route depends on where you sell.

  • Shopify or Etsy: OpenAI says your catalog is already integrated and no application is required. With Shopify agentic storefronts, the ChatGPT channel is active by default for eligible stores. Check it under Sales channels, then Agentic.
  • Everyone else: Apply through the form on OpenAI’s merchant page and expect a waitlist.

On Shopify, you also need your Terms of service, Privacy policy and Return and refund policy completed, and products eligible for Shopify Catalog. For a quick read on one product page, Shopify offers a free agentic readiness audit that checks structured data and robots.txt access.

Check which door you’re standing in before you buy a key.

Block OAI-SearchBot and your site drops out of ChatGPT’s search answers, according to OpenAI’s crawler documentation. OpenAI recommends allowing it in robots.txt and allowing its published IP ranges.

GPTBot is a separate bot that covers training, and you can set the two independently. A robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to register.

So allow OAI-SearchBot, check your firewall and CDN rules, and decide on GPTBot as its own question. We break down the wider scoreboard in our guide to ranking in AI search (GEO).

A blocked bot can’t recommend a product it can’t read.

These are the fields OpenAI marks as required for a discovery feed:

  • item_id: a stable ID, unique per item or variant
  • title and description
  • url and image_url
  • brand and seller_name
  • availability and price

Then follow the rules that trip people up, all from OpenAI’s spec:

  • Use a real brand and seller name, not placeholders.
  • Keep titles around 150 characters and descriptions in plain text, around 5,000 at most.
  • Send one row per variant, with a shared group_id.
  • Write price as an amount plus currency code, like 79.99 USD.
  • Set availability explicitly. The value unknown doesn’t assert the item is in stock.
  • Never put price inside an offer ID.
  • Add a valid GTIN if you have one, and don’t invent an MPN to cover a gap.

Placeholders are for prototypes. A feed is a promise.

OpenAI’s spec says sale dates, expiry dates and availability dates don’t schedule changes. When a sale starts or ends, you update the feed.

OpenAI’s docs also describe an initial sample feed for validation, then daily snapshots. Daily is the baseline.

  1. Build the feed from the same source as your product pages, not a side spreadsheet.
  2. Update it when a sale starts or ends, and flip sold-out rows to out_of_stock.
  3. Spot-check 20 SKUs a week, feed price and stock against the live page.

If the feed and the page disagree, the buyer believes the page.

5. Add the Proof a Skeptical Buyer Would Ask For

OpenAI’s docs say required fields keep price and availability accurate, while recommended attributes like rich media and reviews improve ranking, relevance and trust.

So fill the optional fields that answer a buyer’s doubts:

  • Reviews: product-level review_count and star_rating, matching your page. Keep store reviews out of them.
  • Returns: accepts_returns, the return window and a policy URL.
  • Shipping: shipping_price. Blank means unknown, not free.
  • Images: extra angles through additional_image_urls. This is where 3D product renders earn their place, showing the angle a photo shoot missed.
  • Specifics: material, color, dimensions and condition.

Skeptical buyers check returns first. Put it in the feed.

Pull 20 real questions from sales calls and your support inbox. Run them through ChatGPT once a month and log three things: were you named, who was named instead, and what price and stock did it show?

Answers shift between runs, so trust the pattern across questions, not one screenshot.

Then look at where those clicks land. Because purchases are completed on your own site, your conversion rate optimization now does the job in-chat checkout was meant to do. Filter ChatGPT referrals in your business and website analytics and watch what those visitors do with behavioral tracking.

Being named is a win. Being bought is the point.

If You Only Have Two Hours This Week, Do These Three Things

Not ready for a full feed project? Start here.

  1. Check the crawler (15 minutes). Open your robots.txt and confirm OAI-SearchBot isn’t blocked.
  2. Spot-check 20 products (45 minutes). Compare price and stock in your feed or catalog against the live product page. Fix every mismatch.
  3. Ask ChatGPT five buyer questions (one hour). Log whether you’re named, who is instead, and what it shows for price. That list is your project plan.

Two hours of checking beats two months of guessing.

Three Things We’d Skip Before Anyone Pitches Them to You

  • A “guaranteed placement” package. OpenAI’s feed spec says search eligibility doesn’t guarantee display, and it treats ads as a separate setting. Anyone promising a spot in organic results is guessing.
  • A custom ChatGPT app as step one. OpenAI says most merchants start with product feeds, and apps are optional and best suited to larger merchants wanting more control.
  • A tool that fills your gaps with made-up data. The spec says to omit unknown values, not stuff in placeholders or invented identifiers.

Skip the shortcuts. Fix the data.

This Is the Order We’d Run Before Touching a Single Product Page

At “TheMayk”, our search work opens with a documented audit, not a hunch. For ChatGPT shopping, we’d start in the same place: crawl access, feed readiness, price and stock accuracy, and the page buyers land on.

It builds on the method we use for AI search visibility. If you want the background, start with how we improve SEO rankings with AI search.

Stop guessing. If your products aren’t in the answer, let’s find out why. Book a free strategy call at www.themayk.com. In 30 minutes we review your brand, funnel and ad spend, then send a written summary whether or not you hire us.
