How to Rank in AI Search (GEO)

You’re on page one for the terms that pay the bills. Your SEO report is green. Then a buyer asks ChatGPT who to hire in your category, and your name isn’t in the answer.

Your agency says give it time. We’d say you’re playing the wrong game. To rank in AI search, you don’t climb a list. You earn a sentence inside the answer.

Ready to Stand Out in an AI-Saturated Market?

Publishing more generic content won’t win back lost attention. If your marketing is everywhere but driving zero results, it is time to change your strategy. Stop guessing what works and stop wasting budget on noise that buyers ignore. Reach out to “TheMayk” today to book your free strategy call and transform your content into marketing that actually gets noticed.

Your Agency Says You Rank Fine, and ChatGPT Has Never Heard of You

Here’s how it usually goes. The monthly report shows rankings, impressions, a tidy line going up. Nobody checks what the buyer actually sees when they type a full question into an AI assistant.

That gap is getting expensive. A Pew Research Center analysis of 900 U.S. adults’ browsing in March 2025 found that when a Google results page showed an AI summary, people clicked a regular result in 8% of visits. Without one, it was 15%.

And the links inside the summary? Pew says they got clicked in just 1% of visits. The AI answer is the new first page, and most of your buyers never scroll past it.

Now here’s the part most reports hide. The same Pew analysis found that longer, question-style searches trigger AI summaries far more often than short ones. Just 8% of one- or two-word searches produced one.

Your report tracks the short keywords. Your buyers type the long questions. That’s where the answer box lives, and that’s where you’re invisible.

The clicks that survive are worth more, so your conversion rate optimization has to carry more weight than it did two years ago.

Fewer clicks, higher stakes, and a report that measures the wrong thing.

Ranking in AI Search Is a Different Game, and Most Teams Are Still Playing the Old One

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the practice of shaping your content so AI engines pick it up and cite it. The term comes from a 2023 research paper by academics from Princeton, IIT Delhi and other institutions, later published at the ACM KDD 2024 conference.

The researchers tested what actually moves visibility inside AI-generated answers. The result should annoy anyone who’s been sold keyword density for a decade.

Keyword stuffing, the classic SEO move, offered little to no improvement in AI answers.

What did work? Three things that have nothing to do with keywords: adding citations, adding quotations from credible sources, and adding statistics. The paper reports that its best methods lifted visibility by up to 40% against unoptimized content.

So if your content plan is “more blog posts with the keyword in the H2,” you’re optimizing for a referee that left the building.

Same internet, different rules.

AI Doesn't Rank Your Page. It Quotes the Source It Can Verify

Here’s the insight most blogs skip.

A search ranking is a shelf position. Everyone on the shelf is visible, and the buyer picks. An AI answer is different. It stitches one response together from fragments and attaches a few sources. You don’t get a position. You get a share of the answer, or you get nothing.

That changes what authority means. In SEO, authority was mostly links pointing at you. In AI answers, the engine is looking for fragments it can check and reuse without risk.

The GEO paper shows how lopsided this gets. Applying the “cite sources” method lifted visibility for sites ranked fifth in search results by 115.1%. The same method lowered visibility for the top-ranked sites by 30.3% on average.

Read that twice. The site sitting at number five, with receipts, beat the site at number one without them.

One honest note before you rebuild your site around a single study. The experiments ran on a simulated engine plus Perplexity, and engines change every few months. Treat the percentages as direction, not a promise.

Google’s own guidance points the same way from a different angle. Its documentation on AI features says the usual search fundamentals apply, with no extra requirements and no special optimizations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Translation: anyone selling you a secret “AI schema” is selling decoration. There’s no trick. There’s content a machine can trust, delivered by a site a machine can reach.

Stop Leaking Revenue to "Optimized" Mediocrity

Key Takeaway

Here's How We'd Get Your Brand Cited in AI Search in Five Moves

Run these in order. Each one closes a different leak between your expertise and the answer box.

1. Open the Door Before You Redecorate the Room

Start with access. Open your robots.txt and check your firewall and CDN rules. Google’s documentation lists crawl access as a baseline for appearing in its AI features, and CDN settings that quietly block bots are a common culprit.

Then check OpenAI’s search crawler. OpenAI’s crawler documentation says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot won’t be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and it recommends allowing the bot. That’s separate from GPTBot, which covers training. You can decide on those two independently.

Do this and you’re eligible. Skip it and nothing else on this list matters.

You can’t be quoted by a crawler you’ve locked out.

Pick your ten highest-value pages. Rewrite the top of each so the first two sentences answer the question the page exists for, in plain English. No warm-up. No “in this guide we’ll explore.”

The GEO paper found that simplifying language and improving fluency lifted visibility by 15-30%. Clear beats clever, every time.

If you’re producing at volume, this is where AI-powered content creation earns its keep, as long as a human strategist rewrites every draft for voice and accuracy before it ships.

If a stranger can’t quote your opening line, an engine won’t either.

Go through those same ten pages with a highlighter. Every “faster,” “better,” and “proven” gets one of two fates: a real number with a link to the primary study, or deletion.

Primary means the original study, the original filing, the original dataset. Not a blog that summarized a blog.

This is the cheapest move on the list, and it maps straight onto what the research found worked: citations, quotations and statistics. It also makes you look like the adult in a category full of adjectives.

Receipts get quoted. Adjectives get skipped.

Engines can find a generic explainer anywhere. What they can’t find elsewhere is your data: your return rates, your delivery times, what your own tests showed when you changed the checkout.

That’s why we push clients to treat their analytics as a content asset. Your behavioral tracking and business and website analytics already hold the original numbers. Most brands just never publish them.

Pick one finding per month. Name the method, show the number, state the limits. Rewriting the same ten listicles with a new intro isn’t a content strategy.

Original data is the only content nobody else can copy.

5. Test the Questions Your Buyers Actually Type, Then Write Down Who Gets Cited

Build a list of 20 real buyer questions. Pull them from sales calls, your support inbox and your long-tail search queries. Remember, the long ones are the ones that trigger AI summaries.

Once a month, run all 20 through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI features. For each, log three things: were you cited, who was, and which page won.

Now you have a scoreboard. You’ll see which pages earn citations, which competitors keep showing up, and where your content is thin. Track visits from AI assistants in your analytics so you can tie citations to pipeline, not vibes.

You can’t fix what you’ve never measured.

This Is the Same Order We Run on Our Own Site First

We don’t ask clients to do anything we haven’t done to ourselves. At THEMAYK, our own site runs on answer-first paragraphs, clear entity definitions, original data and clean schema markup. It’s the same method we use for client search work, which is why AI assistants can quote us accurately.

For most brands, the first move is a 30-minute review of where you stand today: your content, your funnel and your tracking. If you want that review pointed at AI search, we’ll do exactly that.

If your name isn’t in the answer, let’s find out why. Book a free strategy call at www.themayk.com. In 30 minutes we review your brand, funnel and ad spend, then send a written summary whether or not you hire us.

Stop guessing. Start growing.

Conclusion

The flood of generic AI content makes standing out harder than ever as buyers scroll past predictable posts. Producing more volume isn’t the fix; authentic, original insights are. Stop guessing what works and stop wasting budget on noise.
