How to Filter Bot Click Spikes in Google Search Console

Your Google Search Console click spike showed up overnight, and now a client wants to know what you changed. The usual advice is to wait a few days and see if it holds. Don’t.

If impressions barely moved while clicks went vertical, there’s a good chance no human clicked anything. Here’s how we confirm that in a few minutes, and how we keep it out of your reports.

Need Help Making Sense of Your SEO Data?

Unusual traffic patterns can make it difficult to understand whether your website is actually growing. Instead of relying on misleading numbers, focus on accurate analytics and meaningful performance insights. At THEMAYK, we help businesses identify data inconsistencies, improve reporting, and make informed marketing decisions. Clicks Went Vertical While Impressions Sat Still

Between Oct. 31 and Nov. 2, 2026, several sites saw clicks jump 2x to 6.5x while impressions and rankings stayed flat, according to Marie Haynes’ analysis for Search Engine Journal. One property went from roughly 50 clicks a day to 327.

That’s a sudden clicks spike with impressions flat. It’s also exactly the kind of chart that lands in a client deck with a green arrow next to it.

Then the clicks fall back to normal. Now you’re explaining a “loss” that was never real, because the win never was.

Fake clicks don’t just pollute a chart. They set you up to look wrong twice: once when you celebrate, and again when you explain the drop.

Bad data in a client report is a trust problem, not a traffic problem.

Real Searchers Don’t Click Page Five

Here’s the detail most people miss. On the affected sites, pages ranking in positions 12 to 54 suddenly logged click-through rates between 45% and 100%, mostly on desktop, per the same analysis.

Page one earns the clicks. Page five earns almost none. When the deepest listings suddenly out-click everything above them, that’s Search Console bot traffic, not demand.

On the hardest-hit site, desktop clicks ran 14.1x the six-month daily median. Mobile clicks stayed flat.

So why did impressions look unchanged? Scale. Add 275 clicks to a site doing about 18,000 impressions and 50 clicks a day. Impressions move 1.5%. Clicks move 6.5x. Same event, wildly different chart.

Nobody outside Google knows the cause for certain. The analysis lists four candidates:

  • Scrapers or headless browsers that click through results
  • CTR manipulation networks clicking decoy listings
  • AI agents opening pages after running reworded searches
  • A gap in Google’s own bot-click filtering

One page picked up 40 clicks, all from Canada, across 23 reworded versions of the same question. Whichever cause is behind your spike, the author’s conclusion is the same: it isn’t human traffic.

And here’s the good news. You don’t need the cause to run the check. You need the pattern.

A spike that lives on page five, on desktop, with flat impressions leaves a fingerprint.

Key Takeaway

The Five-Step Check We Run on Any Google Search Console Click Spike

Run these in order. Each step either confirms the spike is automated or sends you somewhere else.

Two Tabs Will Tell You Most of the Story

Open the Performance report for Search results and set the date range to include the spike. Search Console lets you break results down by device and country, so use both tabs.

Click Devices, then Countries. You’re looking for three things:

  • Desktop clicks jumping while mobile stays flat
  • One country accounting for most of the new clicks
  • Clicks up, impressions barely moved

Mobile is your cleanest evidence. On the hardest-hit site, mobile clicks ran 30 on the spike day against 25 to 40 on the days before.

If mobile looks normal, you already have your first answer.

Now find which URLs took the hits. The setup takes a minute:

  1. Tick Average CTR and Average position above the chart so both columns appear.
  2. Open the Pages tab, not Queries. Search Console hides most one-off queries for privacy, so Queries will look empty.
  3. Click the filter icon in the table header, choose Position, then Greater than, then enter 10.
  4. Sort by clicks, highest first.

Anything ranking on page two or deeper with a 30% to 100% CTR is your suspect list, as the analysis describes.

A page sitting at position 40 with a 70% click-through rate isn’t a success story. It’s a flag.

Everyone Blames the Creative While the Page Gets a Free Pass

This is how you filter Search Console data so the headline chart tells the truth. Click + Add filter, choose Page, then URLs not containing, and enter the slug or subfolder (like /locations/).

That removes the spiked pages and keeps everything else intact.

There’s a limit, though. If dozens of pages spiked, you can’t strip them one by one, and the top chart can’t be filtered by position. In that case, filter to Device: Mobile and use it as the clean trendline you show people.

Don’t hide the spike. Show the filter you used and why you used it.

Right-click the chart, choose Add annotation, pick the date, and write a note of up to 120 characters. Google’s own announcement of custom annotations in Search Console notes that everyone with access to the property can see them, so keep sensitive details out.

Something like this works: “Bot-like desktop click spike, positions 10+. No site changes.”

Future you won’t remember what happened. The annotation will.

Tell Your Client Nothing Needs Fixing

This is the step people skip, and it’s the one clients care about most. A spike doesn’t mean you broke something, and it doesn’t mean you need to fix something.

Because this is automated activity, you don’t need to rewrite pages or disavow anything, and the clicks should settle back to baseline, according to the same analysis.

Say it before they see the chart:

“Search Console logged automated clicks on deep-ranking pages. Mobile traffic and rankings didn’t move. We’ve annotated the date and filtered the affected URLs. Nothing on the site needs to change.”

Short, calm, done. If the chart is dropping instead of spiking, that’s a different diagnosis, and we’ve covered how to stop losing traffic to Google core updates.

Clients forgive a spike. They don’t forgive a surprise.
