You’ve seen the screenshots: a floating bar, rounded corners, a rebuilt chat box. So you went hunting for the setting that turns on the WhatsApp new Android layout. There isn’t one, and the “enable it now” shortcuts floating around can get an account banned. Here’s the real status, and what to fix in your business before it ships.
While you cannot manually enable WhatsApp’s new Android layout yet, attempting shortcuts like unofficial apps or unauthorized beta files risks permanent account bans. The redesign is rolling out strictly on WhatsApp’s schedule. The smartest strategy is to prepare your business right now. Update through official channels, audit your support instructions for layout-dependent language, and track your customer paths so your sales funnel remains completely seamless when the update officially arrives.
There’s no “new layout” switch in WhatsApp’s settings. Not hidden, not buried. It isn’t there.
That’s because the redesign isn’t a setting. It’s an unreleased build. WABetaInfo, the tracker that spotted it, lists the redesigned bottom navigation bar as under development and not yet available for beta testing.
So the guides promising a one-tap switch are guessing. A few of them point you at something worse.
And if WhatsApp is a sales or support channel for you, this isn’t just curiosity. Your customers’ phones update on WhatsApp’s schedule, not yours. Most of them will never read a release note. They’ll just open the app one day and find a different screen.
No setting means no shortcut. There’s only a rollout.
These are the three shortcuts people usually reach for:
Here’s what WhatsApp says about them. Its Help Center calls unofficial apps fake WhatsApp apps built by third parties that violate its Terms of Service, and says it can’t validate their security practices.
If you get a “Temporarily banned” message and don’t switch to the official app, your account might be permanently banned. For a business number your customers use, that’s not a risk worth taking for rounded corners.
A shortcut that doesn’t exist can still cost you your account.
Here’s where it gets interesting. This isn’t one redesign. It’s a string of experiments, and the design has moved four times in about three weeks:
WABetaInfo says the final version may still look different. It also notes this is the bar’s first new look in three years.
One more detail most coverage skips. The Android bar follows the iOS tab bar’s floating shape, but WABetaInfo says Android won’t necessarily copy iOS’s translucent effect. It keeps its own design rules.
If it’s still changing every week, it isn’t finished.
Each of those reports carries the same status line: under development, not yet available for beta testing. WABetaInfo says WhatsApp hasn’t enabled the bar for beta testers and will make it available to some users in a future update, with no date announced.
That’s a staged rollout. WhatsApp picks who sees it and when. It’s the same over-the-air logic we broke down in our look at Tesla’s IoT setup, where the company decides what lands on your device and on what schedule.
The chat bar test shows what’s coming. Per WABetaInfo, both designs move the text input to the top of the bar and fold the send button into it:
Now here’s the part that matters if you sell through WhatsApp. If the label-free bar ships, any instruction that says “tap the Updates tab” stops matching what customers see. The same goes for “tap the paperclip next to the message box.”
WhatsApp decides who sees it first. You decide whether your customers are ready.
There won’t be a banner or a setup screen. Based on what WABetaInfo has described so far, you’d simply notice the change:
If your bar still sits flush at the bottom with text labels, you’re on the current layout. Keep it that way until WhatsApp moves you.
When it reaches your phone, it will have reached some of your customers too.
You can’t flip the switch, but you can get ahead of it. Here are the five moves we’d make, and none of them need a beta build.
Open Google Play, find WhatsApp and install every update. Stay on the official app so the layout reaches you the way WhatsApp intends, in its own rollout.
You skip the ban risk and the security question marks. You also get the redesign the day it’s yours, not a patched copy of it.
WhatsApp’s Google Play beta program is official. But WABetaInfo has reported that Google Play caps it at 10,000 spots and that it’s almost always full, and that WhatsApp has been testing a way to join from inside the app for some users.
Even a seat won’t unlock this layout, because it isn’t switched on for testers. Join if you want early looks at other features, and back up your chats first.
Pull your WhatsApp how-to emails, FAQ pages, support macros, ads and onboarding screenshots. Flag every one that names a tab label, points to a button position or shows the chat box.
That list is everything that expires the day the layout ships. You’ll know the size of the job before it lands.
Give one person ownership of it. A list nobody owns turns into a pile of outdated screenshots six months from now.
Describe the action and show the screen. A short walkthrough clip beats a sentence like “tap Updates,” because a video can show the icon even when the label disappears.
This is exactly what an explainer video is for. Record it once and it survives both layouts.
Write the written version in two parts, the action and the result: “Tap the Updates icon to open Status.” If the label vanishes, the sentence still makes sense.
Split your click-to-chat and onboarding numbers by device. Set up behavioral tracking so you can see where Android users stop, then run a sales funnel breakdown the week the layout reaches your own phone.
If Android completion dips right after the rollout, you’ve just measured what the interface change cost you. If it doesn’t, you’ve earned the right to stop worrying. change. Your customer path shouldn’t break when it does.
